Bernadine was born in 1974 at Santa Teresa in the Northern Territory. She had a traditional upbringing and attended school in Alice Springs. Bernadine is married to Steven Pitjara and now lives in Adelaide, South Australia. Her sister in law is famous artist Anna Pitjara Price who she often works alongside at various galleries throughout Australia.
