About Us

Desert Art Distributors is an Adelaide based business which has been operating as a supplier of high-end Aboriginal artwork to the Australian and international retail market since 1990.

In the 1980s the Director was exposed to Aboriginal art whilst on business trips to the Northern Territory and was instantly fascinated with the whole concept of Aboriginal culture and their laws and beliefs. As such, he travelled to remote communities to gain an intimate understanding of Aboriginal culture and the meaning of the various stories depicted through art, and in doing so made key contacts with artists and also reputable galleries within Australia.

For many years Desert Art Distributors were a major supplier of artwork and artefacts to Tandanya (National Aboriginal Cultural Institute) in Adelaide and have been contracted by Ayers Rock Resort to supply an artist in residence for two months per year since 1993. We have also been responsible for organising numerous exhibitions for various galleries throughout Australia and overseas with many of them being sell-out successes.

We are fortunate to have developed many close friendships with Aboriginal artists and their extended families. One such family is that of Maureen Nampijinpa Hudson who we began working with in 1993 and still continue to do so to this day. Over this period we have seen Maureen’s children have children of their own and now this third generation are becoming accomplished artists, all under the guidance and advice of their Grandmother. It is our pleasure to present to the general public a selection of artwork from our fantastic team of talented artists.

After 30 years, Trevor Chant has decided to step back from the day to day running of the business and has entrusted Helen and Steve Alexander to take it forward from here. Helen purchased her first piece of art from Desert Art 14 years ago and has gone on to purchase several more pieces since. Steve and Helen both have a passion for Aboriginal Art and hope to help many more people find the joy in owning pieces of this amazing and important Australian art. We will continue to build on the friendships and contacts with our artists and we are here to help everyone with their exciting purchases.
